dogs in swaziland

Swaziland has a lot of dogs, but they "use" dogs in a different way than Americans. For example, most Swazi dogs are "guard" dogs and almost always sleep outside. When I asked a Swazi if they ever let dogs sleep on their couch or even their beds, he laughed at me. Some dogs in Swaziland are homeless, and wander through the towns looking for food. There is an animal welfare society here that encourages spaying/neutering and vaccinations. I don't think this cutie was homeless, but he definitely stays outside all the time and was looking for some food. Cats seem to be much less common, though they are around.

Funny thing about this dog -- a few days ago I stopped to have a bite to eat at Quatermain's, and this VERY SAME DOG came up to me! He clearly gets around. I tried to feed him my potato + cheese dish, but he wouldn't touch it. It was very hot and he lay down in the shadow of a large truck. I thought I would "capture" him and take him home, but he obviously would not be happy. He is self-sufficient. Also, two little boys came up to me while I was eating looking for money. The waiter told them that he would beat them if they didn't go away. I gave them some money for bread for the Pick-n-Pay (grocery store in the same plaza). Who knows if the elder boy shared with the younger boy. I hope so.
